Frequently asked questions
Thinking about your first Patola, or adding to a collection you already love? Here are clear answers on weaves, telling handwoven from printed, styling, care, shipping and buying with confidence.
A Patola is a handwoven silk saree from Gujarat, made with the ikat method: the threads are tied and dyed in the planned pattern before they go on the loom. The result is bold, crisp motifs in rich colour, and a craft that has been practised in Gujarat for centuries.
In a Single Ikkat Patola, only one set of threads, either the warp or the weft, is dyed in the pattern before weaving. In a Double Ikkat Patola, both sets are dyed separately and must meet exactly on the loom, which makes it far more demanding to weave.
Almost every step is done by hand: preparing the silk, tying and dyeing the threads, lining up the pattern and weaving it. Skills like these take years to learn and are passed down within weaving families, and a single saree can occupy weavers for days or months.
A traditional Single Ikkat Patola takes around 7 to 10 days. A Double Ikkat Patola can take several weeks or even months, depending on how detailed the design is.
These details are worth looking at closely:
No single sign proves a saree is handwoven on its own. Look at them together, along with the product details and the seller's information about where and how it was made.
We are happy to show any saree on a video call before it is dispatched, so you can see exactly what you are buying.
Traditional Patola is handcrafted. Styles such as Semi Ikkat, Single Ikkat and Double Ikkat involve different amounts of hand work and different levels of weaving difficulty, so ask about the specific saree you are considering.
Begin with the occasion, then think about the colours and motifs you enjoy, your budget, the weave you prefer and how comfortable you want the saree to be for the length of the event.
Classic designs such as Navratna and Nari Kunjar are much loved for weddings and bridal functions, in both Single Ikkat and Double Ikkat. Choose a colour and border that suit your role in the celebration.
Single Ikkat and Semi Ikkat sarees are a good fit for festivals, family gatherings and cultural events. They look traditional while staying comfortable to wear for hours.
Yes. Lighter Single Ikkat and Semi Ikkat sarees are easy to drape and comfortable to wear for long functions, which makes them a good first Patola.
Try a contemporary blouse cut, keep jewellery minimal or wear one statement pair of earrings, and experiment with a belt, a jacket or a new drape. A Patola is rooted in heritage, but it looks just as good styled for today.
Plain silk, contrast, embroidered, sleeveless and designer blouses all work. Pick one that matches the occasion and the look you want.
Yes. Many women choose Patola for corporate events, business gatherings, cultural functions and other formal occasions.
Not at all. Patola is worn for festivals, office events, family functions and celebrations of every kind, and it makes a memorable gift.
We do not recommend it. Patola is handwoven silk, so professional dry cleaning is the best way to protect its texture, colours and weave.
